SCITREK AND LANCOPE KICK-OFF SALLY RIDE SCIENCE CLUB FOR THE 2003-2004 SCHOOL YEAR
MARCI MCCARTHY TO PRESENT "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A GEEK (PROGRAMMER) TO WORK WITH TECHNOLOGY"
ATLANTA, Ga., August 25, 2003 - ATLANTA (August 25, 2003) - SciTrek is excited to announce the first Sally Ride Science Club meeting of the school year with guest role model Marci McCarthy, director of marketing with Lancope. On Saturday, September 6, 2003, McCarthy will present "You Don't Have to Be a Geek (Programmer) to Work with Technology." To demonstrate this subject matter, she will work with the girls to develop a simple technology product and help them create a marketing plan to advertise the product.
"The Sally Ride Science Club fills a critical void in educating young girls about career opportunities in the technology arena," said McCarthy. "As a middle school girl, I was unaware of the diverse opportunities that existed in the technology industry. Now I am honored to share my experiences as a technology executive, impart my knowledge of having a fulfilling marketing career, and encourage girls to be tomorrow's technology future."
The event will be held from 2pm to 4pm in the Orientation Room at SciTrek. All girls in grades five through eight are invited to attend. The fee is $6 per participant. Parents can register their daughters by e-mailing sallyrideclub@scitrek.org with their names and phone numbers as well as the girls' names, ages and schools.
Founded by former astronaut Sally Ride, America's first woman in space, the Sally Ride Science Club provides support for all girls who are, or might become, interested in science, math, and technology. Its mission is to increase the number of girls who are technically literate and who have the foundation they need to go on in science, math, or engineering. As the first national club with the mission of supporting girls in their exploration of the universe of science and technology, the Sally Ride Science Club is open to upper elementary and middle school girls across the country and actively encourages membership from diverse groups of girls.
The Sally Ride Science Club at SciTrek is the first local chapter in the nation. SciTrek started the club in September 2002 and held a number of monthly meetings throughout the 2002-2003 school year. During the meetings, girls worked on a different activity each month, which in many cases was led by scientists and other professional women from the Atlanta area.
They covered a variety of topics including production and investigation methods, cartography and space science, engineering, microbiology, and cardiology. More than 130 girls participated in the club's first year. SciTrek believes the number of girls will continue to increase as the next school year progresses.
